Ulsect is a fairly new dutch death metal band containing members of Dodecahedron and Textures. And I have to admit that you can hear this in their sound. Ulsect is at its base clearly a death metal band, but where most death metal bands either opt for brutality or for technicality, Ulsect goes for an overall cold and uneasy feeling. Based on the members other bands you know that there is quite a level of technicality and alternative songstructures present. But all that technical prowess is always in service of the general feeling of coldness and unease that this record has. There are also slower, almost post metal like passages to enhance that feeling.
To me it sounds like a death metal approach to what a band like Deathspell Omega does in black metal. Another band I heard used in relation to the music on this record is Triptykon. And I think there is a hint of truth in that statement as well.
The bottom line is that this is an interesting quality death metal record that people in genres like Djent, post-metal and even the modern black metal variant should also give a listen to.
